Beth grew up in a world filled with music. Her family owned Lederman Music Company, one of Arizona’s largest music store chains. With a whole store filled with pianos, all begging to be played, what was a young girl to do? Learn to play! Determined not to waste any time, she began classical study at the age of 5. She quickly mastered the basics and then branched out into jazz and classical. If you’re good at jazz and classical, you can play any style of music—and Beth does.

Education

Beth received private lessons during her childhood before attending Lewis & Clark College, Mt. Hood Community College (both in Oregon), and NAU in Flagstaff, studying jazz and classical music and playing with the jazz ensembles. Beth received her B.A. in Music, Cum Laude, from ASU in 1990. After graduation, she continued to refine her technique by studying privately with Chuck Marohnic for a number of years.

Band Leader Positions
Beth leads several groups that play around the Valley and are currently available for performances.
The Beth Lederman Jazz Group
This group melds the worlds of Latin music and jazz, both traditional and contemporary. Latin music, which comprises the bulk of the repertoire and for which Beth has a passion, is represented by Cuban and Brazilian rhythms—salsa and cha-cha, mixed with samba, bossa-nova, and calypso. This group is high energy and fun and can easily switch to playing more mainstream jazz and swing music, including works by George Gershwin and Cole Porter, among others. A classic trio of piano, bass, and drums composes the core of the group with either percussion and/or a horn player added depending on the situation.

When a woman has been playing professionally for over 20 years, and playing well, she's bound to collect a lot of press clippings. Beth has given interviews for magazines, newspapers, and local Phoenix radio stations. Rather than inundate you with everything wonderful anyone has ever said about Beth (that would just take too long), she presents for your reading enjoyment a few of the more recent interviews in which she's participated.

Beth Lederman is a bright, articulate person across an interview table or behind her keyboards. Anyone who has seen and heard her perform…can attest to her immense talents. She is deserving of this first Musician of the Month Award and the firm support of the jazz community and jazz-loving patrons of this, or any area.

"You were spectacular!!!! I appreciate you sharing your gift of music with us in this clinic. After you left we immediately put away the square music that we were rehearsing and attacked the difficult section of "Sunny." Their ears were primed to hear close harmonies and then we invited people to come sing the melody, concert style. The directions were to stay close to the melody, but to also make their own by not singing exactly what was on the page. Usually we have 2 - 4 people volunteer. Tonight we had 9. That's great. Perhaps the biggest compliment to you is that our accompanist, who doesn't play jazz at all, said she could spend many more hours listening to your explanations and demonstrations. I, too, was completely impressed and engaged. You were far more than I had imagined. Hopefully, we can have you back.
Cary Burns, Director of Tempe Community Chorus, July 2010
"Wonderful night! The head of the music program was thoroughly impressed with your sensitive, skillful renderings; not a surprise to those of us who enjoy the privilege of having you on stage. Thank you most sincerely."
Paul McDermand, Band Leader, December 2009
Dear Beth, You can't imagine how mundane the awards chapel was before your arrival. I am so impressed with how you entertain and tie it all together without ever overpowering the event. I thoroughly enjoy the music you play so beautifully. Thanks!!
  Candace Wilkinson, All Saints
Beth, thanks so much. Your music was wonderful. We all enjoyed it! This was our first event with live music and we heard from several members and guests how much they enjoyed the music! I am sure we will be in touch for next year's event. It was nice meeting you and thanks again for beautiful music you play. Must be nice to have such a talent.
