beth's biography

Beth grew up in a world filled with music. Her family owned and operated Lederman Music Company, one of Arizona’s largest music store chains. With a whole store filled with pianos from spinets to conservatories to grands, all begging to be played, what was a young girl to do? Learn to play! Determined not to waste any time, she began classical study at the age of 5. Scales and the basics were quickly mastered, and from there Beth branched out into jazz and classical. If you’re good at jazz and classical, you can play any style of music—and Beth does.

Education:
After a childhood of private lessons, Beth attended Lewis & Clark College, Mt. Hood Community College (both in Oregon), and NAU in Flagstaff, studying jazz and classical music and playing with the jazz ensembles. Beth received her B.A. in Music, Cum Laude, from ASU in 1990. After graduation, she continued to refine her technique by studying privately with Chuck Marohnic for a number of years.

Band Leader:
Beth has several groups which play around the Valley and are currently available for performances.

Banda Três: featuring Brazilian Music, World Music, Jazz Music
Banda Três brings together music from around the world to create a beautiful and exciting new sound. The group is multi-lingual, featuring the vocals of Salomé, a native of the Azores Islands, who sings in Portuguese, English, Spanish and French. Beth and Salomé are joined by Caji (Carlos Santos) on guitar and vocals, a talented singer/songwriter from Bahia, Brazil. A fantastic rhythm section composed of bass, drums, and percussion rounds out the ensemble.

The group’s repertoire ranges from groovin’ sambas and reggae beats to soft and lovely bossa-novas and French ballads, all flavored with the improvisation and heart-felt spontaneity of jazz. Traditional Brazilian music is a big part of their sound, with featured compositions by Caetano Veloso and Tom Jobim, but they also include works by contemporary artists, as well as play original compositions. Using the international language of music, the group plays with passion and joy, helping bring to life the music of the various cultures and traditions that they love.

Although still a new band, Band Três is already swinging into action with recent or upcoming engagements at:

    The Beth Lederman Jazz Group
This group melds the worlds of Latin music and jazz. Latin music, which comprises the bulk of the repertoire and for which Beth has a passion, is represented by Cuban and Brazilian rhythms—salsa and cha-cha, mixed with samba, bossa-nova, and calypso. This group is high energy and fun and can easily switch to playing more mainstream jazz and swing music, including works by George Gershwin and Cole Porter, among others. A classic trio of piano, bass, and drums composes the core of the group with either percussion and/or a horn player added depending on the situation.

The Beth Lederman Jazz Group was on the Arizona Arts Commission Artist roster for a number of years and played throughout Arizona, including a week-long tour of Mexico in 1990.

    Novo Mundo
Brazilian Jazz was the specialty of this popular group which Beth band-led from 2000–2007. Although currently on sabbatical, the group has two CDs which are still available at Novomundo1.com, or by contacting Beth. Featuring the vocals and guitar playing of Kay Peper, Felix Sainz on the bass, Todd Chuba on drums, and Joe Garcia on percussion, the group enchanted Valley audiences for many years with their unique sound.
